Check temperature and food condition
USDA recommends a freezer temperature of 0°F or below. Note whether food is still hard frozen, whether the door closes fully, and whether this is a freezer compartment or a separate unit.
Useful observations
Specify a chest, upright, or built-in freezer, or the freezer compartment of a refrigerator. Record the actual temperature when possible.
- Food beginning to thaw
- Excess frost inside
- Temperature alarm or cooling changes
- Door seal not making contact
When to stop checking
Keep door openings brief and follow USDA guidance for food affected by temperature changes. Never chip ice with a sharp tool.
Do not remove service panels, test live wiring, disturb gas connections, or open sealed refrigeration systems. Repeated resets do not establish that a fault has been repaired.
Prepare for a paid assessment
Share your observations and full model number. Ask about the diagnostic charge, access requirements, and how an estimate will be approved. Symptoms alone do not identify a failed component or guarantee a repair outcome.
