Keep the kitchen running.

Describe what your KitchenAid refrigerator is doing instead of assuming which component has failed. These are useful symptoms to record before discussing a repair.

  • Food feels warmer than usual
  • Water beneath the cabinet
  • Repeated clicking or unfamiliar noise
  • Ice buildup or uneven cooling

What to mention about your KitchenAid refrigerator repair

Record the temperature in both compartments, whether the lights work, and when cooling changed. Identify freestanding, built-in, or integrated installation.

Before an assessment

Protect perishable food first. USDA recommends a refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below. Do not remove covers or work on refrigerant lines.

Avoid repeated test cycles when equipment leaks, overheats, trips a breaker, or behaves unsafely. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions; these notes are not a diagnosis.

Understand the estimate

Ask about the diagnostic visit charge, whether it is credited toward approved work, and whether labor and any required components are included. Confirm how additional work will be authorized. We do not sell parts or process manufacturer warranty claims.

Common questions

Can you confirm my exact model is covered?

Availability depends on your model, installation, ZIP code, and provider capability. Confirm these details before agreeing to an appointment.

Is this manufacturer warranty service?

No. These pages concern paid, out-of-warranty repair. No manufacturer authorization or affiliation is implied.

Can I buy a replacement part?

No. This is a repair-service website, not a parts retailer. Components may be included in a provider’s approved repair estimate.

Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?

Ask the receiving provider at the time of scheduling. Terms vary by provider and by the accepted estimate.

BRAND DATA

KitchenAid refrigerator — model families, common error codes, parts and scope

Model families

  • KRFC (French-door counter-depth, freestanding)
  • KRFF (French-door, freestanding)
  • KRSC (Side-by-side counter-depth, freestanding)
  • KBSD (Built-in side-by-side, 48-in., dispenser — requires full cabinet cutout)
  • KBSN (Built-in side-by-side, 42-in., no dispenser — requires full cabinet cutout)
  • Architect Series II (built-in French-door and SxS, panel-ready)

Common error codes

Codes vary by generation and are documented by KitchenAid service literature. Confirm the exact code and its meaning against the model’s owner manual before scheduling paid work.

Error codeWhat it typically indicates
POpower outage flag — clear from display; check food safety first
FFfresh-food thermistor / control fault
CE / CFcommunication fault, main board to user interface — common on KBSD/KBSN built-in models
IFicemaker fault code
E5 / E4thermistor or evaporator-fan speed fault — documented for KBSD/KBSN and Architect Series built-in models
LOlow temperature warning — freezer or fresh-food section dropped below safe range

Parts and OEM access

KitchenAid is part of Whirlpool Corporation, so Whirlpool-branded OEM parts (control boards, evaporator fans, water-inlet valves, thermistors, door gaskets) fit most KitchenAid refrigerators by model number. Built-in KBSD and KBSN models use a dedicated control-board platform; order parts by the full KBSD/KBSN model number, not a generic Whirlpool cross-reference. The Architect Series II shares the same built-in platform. Ordering by the complete K-model is the reliable path.

Scope

KitchenAid stand mixers and countertop products are excluded. Built-in KBSD and KBSN refrigerators are flush-mount cabinet installations — confirm the cutout dimensions (typically 84 in. H × 42–48 in. W × 24 in. D) and that cabinetry access is available before scheduling a paid assessment. Architect Series II panel-ready models require removal of the door panel before servicing the door gasket or hinges. Sealed-system (refrigerant) work requires a licensed technician.
